Five Linked to Murder and Optic Fibre Robbery Arrested in Gauteng, Await Trial in Welkom

In a breakthrough operation held in Tembisa, Gauteng, five suspects accused of a highly destructive robbery and murder that took place in Welkom on December 3rd of the previous year were arrested recently. The perpetrators between the ages of 23 and 46 are scheduled to appear at the Welkom Magistrate’s Court to face their charges.



The investigation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (also identified as the Hawks) in conjunction with the Welkom-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team and the Tactical Response Team (TRT), successfully traced down the men suspected of carrying out the devastating crime.


“The suspects, reportedly, marked their entry by ambushing a network plant sited in the Welkom industrial area. Two of them fired shots from their 9mm pistols and managed to hold down the plant employees, on their exit, they shot an employee fatally," stated Warrant Officer Fikiswa Matoti, the provincial spokesperson for the Hawks.



The suspects successfully made away with optic fibre rolls worth approximately R1.5 million and a couple of cell phones. Seven people are said to have been involved in the robbery scheme. Ever since the crime, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team has been relentlessly working to apprehend all the culprits, with two suspects still at large.


In the related court developments, one man, Mzikayise Mokoena, 37, was sentenced for the theft of optic fibre cable in the last month at the Welkom Magistrate’s Court.
