On Thursday, August 31, a catastrophic fire ravaged a five-storey building in central Johannesburg claiming over 50 lives, according to the city's emergency services. The death toll is expected to rise, as search and recovery operations are ongoing, according to spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.

The blaze, which started in the early hours, also left 43 people injured, revealed Mulaudzi. Describing the scene as an "informal settlement", Mulaudzi, a veteran of over 20 years in emergency services, acknowledged he had never encountered a disaster of this magnitude.

The located building sat within an impoverished sector of South Africa's prime economic hub, once a bustling business district. It was used as an informal settlement, housing a vulnerable population with limited options, Mulaudzi explained. Television coverage showed the ghastly aftermath of the fire with fire trucks and ambulances stationed around the red and white building, now marked by charred windows and a perimeter established by police.

Mulaudzi confirmed that at least one child was amongst the victims, underscoring the human tragedy of this incident. The cause of the fire remains undisclosed as investigations are still ongoing.
