Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, Kenny Kunene, is under fire for his toast at an event hosted by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), deemed by many as 'misogynistic'. His remarks, which included a jab at people correcting pronunciation of expensive French champagne brand, Moët & Chandon, have attracted severe backlash on social media.

Kunene, known for his flair for controversy, raised a toast to women, highlighting their significance in societal roles. However, his remarks did not sit well with many, triggering critiques calling his statement a display of gender insensitivity. The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa's principal opposition party, joined the brigade of critics, branding Kunene's comments as 'misogynistic'.

Responding to the backlash, Kunene refuted the allegations, stating that his words were taken out of context. He accused DA Johannesburg chief whip Leah Knott of posting the video to mislead the public. The event, according to Kunene, celebrated women working in the transport industry. He clarified that the expenses for the luxurious beverages, including French champagne and Hennessy brandy, came out of his pocket, not the public funds.

The DA, however, remains unconvinced. They intend to send a request under the Promotion of Access to Information Act to investigate any misuse of taxpayer money during the event. DA Johannesburg caucus leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, referred to the incident as a reflection of ANC's rule and calls for fresh elections in Johannesburg.
