Acting Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka, who has faced heavy criticism for her report on the Phala Phala farm controversy, is likely to take on the mantle of head of the chapter nine institution. This follows her nomination for the role by a parliamentary ad hoc committee on Tuesday.

Elevating Gcaleka's influence in the office, seven out of the eleven members within the ad hoc committee tasked with identifying the next public protector have lent their support to her candidacy. This endorsement signifies Gcaleka's growing prominence and suggests a strong likelihood of her acquisition of the top role.

Though a frontrunner, Gcaleka's path has not been free of controversy. She has been widely criticised for her handling of the Phala Phala farm issue which has potentially influenced perspectives on her ability to efficiently perform the duties required by the role of Public Protector.

Despite disagreements over Gcaleka's suitability, the ad hoc committee's endorsement solidifies her standing and pushes her closer to the critical position within the chapter nine institution. If affirmed, Gcaleka will shoulder the responsibility of investigating any conduct in state affairs or public administration that could result in impropriety or prejudice.
